We will focus on the non-portfolio management issues that typically confront the COO and other leaders within a money management firm, such as how to successfully launch and operate a business. These issues include, business planning, enterprise technology, compliance, market trends, human resources, selection of; fund administrators, accountants, lawyers and prime and executing brokers, etc. A key goal of BMIG’s will be to understand the business and other risks associated with running a money management, while serving as a bridge between the “buy” and “sell” sides.
Robert Akeson is Chief Operating Officer of Daewoo Securities (America), a subsidiary of Mirae Asset Daewoo Co. Ltd. Mirae Asset Daewoo Co. Ltd is an affiliate of Mirae Asset Group, which is Korea’s leading financial group. The group has assets under management of approx. $83bn. Mr. Akeson’s background includes experience managing and building prime brokerage, correspondent clearing, agency execution, research sales, and capital placement businesses (Reg D-related). He has also worked at the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Financial Services, Neuberger Berman, Morgan Stanley and ADP. Mr. Akeson is well versed on issues related to business launch, technology, compliance, risk management, and due diligence for investment management firms. He is a frequent speaker on topics related to liquidity, clearing, Basel III and the hedge fund industry. Mr. Akeson is also a member of the New York Hedge Fund Roundtable. He has taught Money, Banking and Financial Markets at Molloy College and holds a MBA from NYU and BA from Washington College.
