The property/casualty (P/C) insurance industry continued to battle through competitive market conditions in 2012. While there has been material improvement in the pricing environment, particularly in personal lines, the industry remains well capitalized, which reduces the likelihood of a hard market in the near term.

Life insurance investors continued to struggle with plummeting interest rates and the overall pullback of the market in early 2012 despite declining investment losses and record capital levels. Stocks benefited from stability in rates in the latter half and there were signs of rates potentially moving higher late in the year. Although earnings results and 2013 guidance have been a bit of a mixed bag, the outlook is that stock prices more than adequately discount a long-term, low interest rate scenario.
