Agenda
The property/casualty (P/C) insurance industry battled through competitive market conditions in 2011. While there are some indications of more stable pricing conditions and increases in certain lines, the industry remains well capitalized reducing the likelihood of a hard market in the near term.
The life insurance industry continued its recovery in early 2011 as investment losses declined, sales improved for many product lines, and capital levels maintained record levels. In the latter half, however, plummeting interest rates combined with the overall pullback of the market set life insurance stocks back a great deal. While earnings estimates have come down, life insurance stocks reflect a long-term, Japan-like, interest rate scenario. However, it is unlikely the Japan parallel will continue.
