Over the past year bitcoin has gone from a dark web science project to mainstream sensation. But what exactly is a bitcoin, what is it good for, and what future does the online “currency” really have? The doubters think bitcoin is worthless—a figment of the imagination for anarchists, drug dealers, and the Web 2.0 version of gold bugs. Its proponents claim it is a new form of money—stateless and run by an algorithm which assures a fixed supply. Which one has the story right? We’re clearly in uncharted waters when it comes to bitcoin, so any conversation about its future must start with some essential facts and clear-eyed analysis.

This presentation will review how bitcoin operates, its current uses, what it does well, and where it falls short. The bottom line: Bitcoin is clearly revolutionary—a disruptive technology—but its not the world’s central banks that need to worry about competition. It’s the global banking system.

Attend to get a functional understanding about how bitcoin works, from the “mining” of new currency to how the transfer system works. You will walk away with the analytical tools you need to understand the role bitcoin can play in a wide range of industry sectors, including financial services and retail industries.

NYSSA TV Presents with Vinny Catalano: Nicholas J. Colas - Bitcoin: Fad or Future

Who should attend:

Anyone interested in the effect of disruptive technologies. Financial Services analysts. Anyone whose boss has said “Go figure out this bitcoin thing”

Speaker

Nicholas J. Colas is a managing director and chief market strategist at ConvergEx Group. In this role, Colas is responsible for analyzing trends in the economy and financial markets. A seasoned Wall Street analyst and portfolio manager, he is charged with providing ConvergEx clients with in-depth market analysis and commentary through his daily Morning Markets Briefing. His morning notes cover wide-ranging issues and recently have included such topics as ETFs, gold, volatility, asset correlation, Eurozone troubles, Fed policy, and Lady Gaga. Colas previously worked at Rochdale Securities, LLC, a provider of brokerage and independent research services, where he built the equity research team and oversaw development of a proprietary valuation model. Prior to his tenure at Rochdale, Colas served as a portfolio manager at SAC Capital and Silver Capital Management. Earlier in his career, he was a senior equity analyst in the auto and auto parts sector of Credit Suisse First Boston from 1991 through 1999. During that time he covered the sector (auto companies F, C, GM, and various auto suppliers) and was the lead analyst on a number of large investment banking transactions. Colas was ranked as first or second in the Wall Street Journal survey of analysts covering the auto sector from 1997 when the polls started until 1999 when he left the sell side. He was also consistently ranked in the top five in the Institutional Investor survey, during the time when there were more than 20 analysts covering the sector. Colas holds an MBA from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business and a BA in Near Eastern Archaeology from Haverford College.
