Frequently Asked Questions
What is the application process and how long does it take?
Prospective Associate members only need to complete the application: enter general contact information, provide two professional references, and provide payment. This membership takes between 1–2 business days to process electronically and about 3 business days to process in-house.
Prospective Regular/Affiliate members need to complete two separate applications. The first is the NYSSA application, and the second is the CFA Institute application. The link above will allow you to become an Associate member of NYSSA first, so that you can begin to take advantage of NYSSA benefits. After you complete the Associate application, there will be an option for you to be redirected to CFA Institute’s membership webpage. You will be able to begin the application process to become a Regular or Affiliate member. For CFA Institute’s application you will need two sponsors, one a supervisor and the other a Regular member of NYSSA. If you don’t have a supervisor you will need two Regular NYSSA members. The Associate application takes about 1–2 business days to process, and CFA Institute’s may between 8–10 weeks. CFA Institute will forward us your application and we will change your membership type to the approved category determined by CFA Institute.
Prospective Student members must provide a professor’s signature. You can scan and email the application to membership@nyssa.org. You also have the option to mail or fax in the application. This membership takes about three business days to process after the application has been received.
How can I find a sponsor?
Please send your resume and two professional references to membership@nyssa.org. We will forward your request to our Membership Committee. The Membership Committee consists of a few NYSSA members who volunteer to help sponsor members who have trouble finding sponsors. It is up to the committee member to contact the candidate directly. It may take 3–4 weeks to hear a response from the committee. This option, however, is not the most guaranteed way of obtaining a sponsor. It is the applicant’s responsibility to reach out to NYSSA members at their workplace, at an event, or simply by networking. If you want to verify that someone you know is a Regular member, we can verify it for you.
